Costco, but make it app-friendly
DoorDash just widened its grocery-and-retail lane in a pretty big way: Costco is now available nationwide across all U.S. warehouses. That means members can order everything from Kirkland staples to electronics and seasonal stuff without leaving the couch.
The move matters because Costco isn’t some random corner-shop add-on. It’s a major retail name, and DoorDash says this rollout builds on an existing international relationship. Translation: this is less “cute pilot” and more “we’ve been seeing each other for a while.”
Why investors should care
For DoorDash, the Costco deal helps prove the company wants to be more than the thing you use when you’re craving wings at 9:47 p.m. The company is clearly trying to become a broader on-demand commerce platform, with retail as a bigger growth lever.
And the timing isn’t subtle. DoorDash also announced a multiyear NHL partnership, giving it more brand visibility and marketing rights across big televised games and playoff moments. That’s not direct revenue like a delivery order, but it does help DoorDash keep its name in front of consumers who might otherwise think of it as just a food app.
The bigger picture
If DoorDash keeps stacking retail partners like Costco, it gets a lot closer to being a habit, not just a convenience. And habits tend to be where the good economics live.
Big picture: DoorDash is trying to turn your late-night taco app into your everything app, one warehouse club at a time.
