Power is the new product
Cipher Digital didn’t need a fresh chatbot or shiny new chip to get traders excited Thursday. It got something arguably more valuable in the AI era: a bigger power envelope.
ERCOT published a Batch Zero grid capacity update showing potential capacity of up to 3.2 gigawatts for Cipher Digital’s Texas data center sites. In plain English, that’s the kind of number that makes AI infrastructure investors sit up straight. If you’re trying to build high-performance computing campuses, you don’t just need land and ambition—you need electricity, and a lot of it.
Why Wall Street cares
The update reinforces Cipher’s push deeper into AI data centers, where power access is the gating factor. No power, no servers. No servers, no revenue. It’s a brutally simple bottleneck, which is why even a grid note can move the stock.
Still a rebound, not a victory lap
The shares were up about 4% Thursday, adding to Wednesday’s gain, while the broader market was also in a pretty friendly mood. But Cipher is still below its 50-day and 100-day moving averages, so this looks more like a short-term comeback attempt than a clean breakout.
Big picture: in AI infrastructure, the winners may not just be the companies with the best story—they’ll be the ones with enough power to actually tell it.
