Singapore gets a seat in the robotaxi future
Waymo is heading to Singapore, with a plan to bring autonomous ride-hailing to the city-state in 2028. For Alphabet, that’s another reminder that the company’s self-driving side hustle is still very much a real business and not just a science-fair demo with prettier branding.
Why investors should care
This matters because Waymo has been steadily trying to turn its autonomy stack into something that scales beyond a few U.S. markets. Singapore is a big deal: dense, tech-forward, and the kind of place where a robotaxi can actually make sense if the regulators, roads, and maps all play nice.
The bigger vibe here
If Waymo can make the Singapore move work, it strengthens the case that Alphabet’s autonomy push has export potential. That doesn’t mean instant profits — robotaxis still burn cash like a vacationing startup founder — but it does widen the runway for a business line that could someday matter a lot more than it does today.
Big picture: Alphabet keeps planting flags in the future, and this one happens to be on the other side of the planet.
