New boss, new toy box
Disney is giving its tech stack a fresh adult supervision moment. The company said Karandeep Anand, most recently CEO of Character.AI, will join as senior executive vice president and chief technology officer in a newly created role.
He starts on October 2nd and will report directly to Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro. Translation: this isn’t just a ceremonial title shuffle. Disney is putting a dedicated tech chief in the room as it keeps wrestling with the very modern problems of streaming, consumer apps, and AI-fueled personalization.
Why investors should care
A new CTO doesn’t move the stock like an earnings beat would, but it can signal where management wants to spend its attention. And right now, that’s tech infrastructure, consumer experience, and AI — the stuff that can make Disney’s ecosystem feel less like a theme park brochure and more like a slick digital platform.
The bigger picture
Disney has been in constant remix mode: streaming strategy, cost discipline, and making its media empire work in a world where every app wants to be the one on your home screen. Hiring a tech leader with infrastructure and AI experience suggests Disney wants to move faster on that front.
Big picture: not a fireworks headline, but a pretty clear sign Disney thinks the next battleground is software, not just storytelling.
