Coinbase’s latest moonshot
Coinbase is back with another product that sounds like it was invented by a trader who drinks espresso at midnight: single-stock perpetual futures. The filing would let users trade contracts tied to Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia — basically a way to bet on the stocks without owning the stocks.
Why investors should care
If this gets traction, it’s another sign Coinbase is trying to become more than just the place people go when Bitcoin has a personality disorder. Stock-linked derivatives could open up a fresh fee stream and deepen engagement with active traders.
The catch
This is still a filing, not a done deal. Regulators get a vote here, and product ideas can move from “wow, bold” to “not so fast” pretty quickly.
Big picture: Coinbase keeps leaning into the idea that the future of finance is part exchange, part casino, and part software platform — and Wall Street is very much still deciding whether that’s genius or chaos.
