New car tech, but make it faster
Accenture and Google Cloud are rolling out more Horizon, an open-source platform built to help automakers move faster on Android Automotive OS software. And Volvo Cars gets the shiny title of lead industry partner, which means it’s the first big name in line to use the setup.
What Horizon actually does
Think of Horizon as the software equivalent of a massive test track with fewer potholes and fewer real-world headaches. It gives engineers:
- cloud-native tools
- virtual testing environments
- AI-assisted workflows
Volvo says it’s moving its global AAOS development environment onto the platform, which should mean quicker engineering cycles and faster in-car feature development. That matters because car software has become a giant arms race disguised as a dashboard.
Why investors should care
For Accenture, this is less about selling a one-off project and more about showing it can sit right in the middle of the AI buildout — especially in industries that actually need to ship usable software, not just demo a chatbot at a conference.
Google Cloud also gets a nice proof point for its automotive AI pitch, while Volvo gets a shot at shaving time off the painfully slow process of building connected-car experiences. Big picture: the car on your driveway is increasingly a computer on wheels, and ACN wants a bigger hand in writing the code.
