Earnings season’s little speed bump
Synchrony Financial is heading into its third-quarter report on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and the vibe is basically: don’t expect fireworks. Analysts are looking for $2.40 per share in earnings, down from $2.86 a year ago, with revenue pegged at $3.81 billion.
The analyst crowd is trimming its sails
The interesting part isn’t just the upcoming print — it’s the marching band of forecast tweaks around it. JPMorgan cut its price target to $74 from $78 and kept a Neutral rating. UBS went from $87 to $81. TD Cowen still likes the stock but shaved its target to $86 from $90. In other words, nobody’s throwing tomatoes, but the optimism is getting a little less enthusiastic.
Why investors should care
Synchrony already beat expectations in its second quarter on July 21, so this isn’t a “company in trouble” story. But credit-card and consumer finance names can get squishy fast if the economy starts acting weird, so this report will be a clean read on whether borrowers are still holding up or starting to wobble.
- Shares fell 2.5% to $71.72 on Wednesday.
- BMO started coverage with a Market Perform rating and an $81 target.
- Evercore stayed at Outperform but trimmed its target to $80.
Big picture: this is less about one analyst note and more about whether Synchrony can keep its consumer-credit engine humming without the market putting it in timeout.
