Verizon wants a seat at the AI table
Verizon is spending $70 million on a nationwide AI upskilling initiative, branded Verizon AI Skills for America. In plain English: the carrier is betting that teaching people how to use AI is a good way to plant its flag in the AI conversation without pretending it just invented ChatGPT in a baseball cap.
Why this matters
For investors, this is less about an immediate revenue pop and more about positioning. Verizon gets to:
- deepen ties with communities, schools, and workforce programs
- build goodwill around a buzzy technology everyone wants to sound smart about
- keep its name attached to the infrastructure-plus-AI story that still drives enterprise spending
The market angle
On its face, $70 million is not going to move the needle on Verizon’s income statement the way a giant network deal would. But companies don’t always spend money just to make money right away. Sometimes they spend to stay in the room, and in tech-land that room has a sign on the door that says “AI, enter if you dare.”
Big picture
This is classic Verizon: big-brand, long-game, and just useful enough to matter. It’s not a fireworks event, but it does show where management wants the story to go — from old-school telecom to “we’re part of the AI economy too.”
