Berlin gets a new space factory
Planet Labs is adding more hardware muscle to its business with a new satellite manufacturing facility in Berlin. The company says the site can produce up to 60 spacecraft annually, which is basically Planet saying, “We’re not just selling space data — we’re making the ships that collect it.”
Why investors should care
This is more than a shiny ribbon-cutting moment. Manufacturing capacity is the bottleneck in a lot of space names, and expanding it can help Planet keep pace with demand without outsourcing as much of the work.
For investors, the key questions are:
- can Planet fill that extra capacity with real orders?
- does the facility help margins over time by improving efficiency?
- and can the company turn government and defense demand into a steadier revenue engine?
The bigger picture
Planet has been leaning hard into government customers, and that’s often where the durable contracts live. A larger manufacturing footprint in Europe could make it easier to serve those customers while giving the company more operational control.
Big picture: this is a classic “build it now, monetize it later” move. If demand keeps showing up, Berlin could end up looking less like a factory and more like a growth engine with bolts on.
