The market’s favorite growth story just hit a speed bump
AppLovin had a rough Wednesday after Edgewater Research analyst Joe Wittine turned a little less dreamy on the name. His takeaway: the company’s market-share grab may be running into a ceiling, and that’s a problem when your whole thesis is built on never-ending upside.
Wittine didn’t just trim expectations a little. He said fourth-quarter revenue growth may land at just 8% to 9% sequentially, which is a fancy way of saying the engine still runs — it’s just not exactly flooring it anymore. After a stretch where AppLovin’s MAX platform looked like it could keep gobbling up more ad dollars, the analyst now thinks the party is getting quieter.
Why investors are suddenly less impressed
The big worry here is competition. Wittine pointed to Unity as a growing threat and said AppLovin’s net revenue spreads are getting squeezed. In plain English: the company may still be selling the same story, but the margin on that story is getting thinner.
He also said:
- share of wallet and share of voice are no longer rising consistently
- MAX may have hit a functional ceiling
- consensus estimates for late 2026 and 2027 could drift lower before the company even reports its next quarter
That’s not a catastrophe. But it is the sort of commentary that can punch a hole in a premium valuation faster than you can say “growth multiple.”
The new vibe: prove it
Wittine even called his own earlier bullish call into question, which is never a great sign for the stock. His message was basically: AppLovin still has the goods, but investors need a fresh round of proof before handing it a victory lap.
And honestly, that’s where the stock narrative shifts from “great, the numbers are working” to “okay, now keep doing it.” That’s a much harder pitch when the market is already pricing in perfection.
Big picture: AppLovin doesn’t need a disaster to get punished — it just needs the growth story to stop feeling infinite. And today, the market got a little less convinced.
