SoftBank is reaching for the credit card
SoftBank Group is back in the bond market with a chunky $11.1 billion sale, and the timing tells you everything. The money is set to help fund the final $10 billion tranche of its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, expected to close on Oct. 1.
The deal includes $1 billion of senior notes due in 3.5 years, plus $4.5 billion each in 5.5-year and 7.5-year notes. Those dollar bonds come with eye-catching coupons of 8.625%, 9.25%, and 9.75% — basically the financial version of saying, “Yes, this AI dream is expensive.” SoftBank is also selling two €500 million tranches of euro debt, giving it even more firepower.
Why investors should care
This isn't just a routine refinancing. SoftBank has been leaning hard into AI, from OpenAI to Stargate-linked data centers to its bets around Arm and ABB Robotics. The twist is that the company is using debt to keep the machine humming, which means more leverage and more pressure to make these moonshots pay off.
A recent report also said Apollo Global Management could boost its loan to SoftBank’s Vision Fund II, which underscores how much financing muscle SoftBank is trying to assemble. And if you were wondering whether Masayoshi Son is done swinging big, the answer appears to be a very loud no.
Big picture: SoftBank is basically trying to bankroll the AI future with a pile of bonds, which is bold, aggressive, and exactly the kind of thing that can look genius or terrifying depending on how the OpenAI story unfolds.
