Afterpay just got the good chair
Block’s Afterpay brand has been tapped as Fanatics’ preferred buy now, pay later partner. Translation: when sports fans are in full “I need the jersey, the hat, and maybe the limited-edition bobblehead” mode, Afterpay gets a more prominent place at checkout.
That matters because BNPL is basically a business built on one simple idea: make shopping feel a little less painful in the moment and hope the math works out later. If Fanatics keeps sending high-intent shoppers toward Afterpay, Block gets a sturdier pipeline of payment volume.
Why investors should care
This isn’t some flashy moonshot, but it is the kind of distribution deal that can quietly matter:
- More checkout visibility can mean more usage
- More usage can mean more transaction volume
- More transaction volume can mean more reasons to care about Block’s payments ecosystem
Fanatics also has a built-in audience that’s already emotionally compromised by team gear and game-day hype. That’s a pretty decent recipe for BNPL adoption, because the customer is not exactly walking in to buy a sensible accountant shoe.
Big picture: checkout placement is the new real estate
For Afterpay, this is less about a headline-grabbing product launch and more about winning shelf space at the digital mall. In payments, distribution is the whole game. If you can become the default “pay later” option where people already want to spend, that can be worth more than a thousand buzzwords.
Big picture: this is a small but useful win for Block, and a reminder that in fintech, the checkout screen is where the money actually starts talking.
