Space, but make it compute
Google is apparently taking its AI ambitions sky-high — literally. The company is planning an early test that would send AI chips into space as part of a longer-term idea for orbital data centers.
Why bother launching chips into orbit? Because the AI boom has turned data centers into electricity-guzzling monsters, and space has a very big, very empty selling point: lots of room and a lot less earthly red tape. Of course, there’s also the tiny issue of, you know, getting hardware to survive the ride.
The ‘what if this actually works?’ part
If this experiment goes anywhere, it could open the door to a new kind of infrastructure play:
- less dependence on scarce land and power on Earth
- a possible workaround for cooling and energy constraints
- a fresh way to support the company’s AI push without fighting over grid capacity like it’s Black Friday at Costco
That said, this is still an early test, not a revenue machine. So don’t expect orbit-based cash flow next quarter. But it does show Google is thinking way beyond the usual cloud-computing playbook.
Big picture
Alphabet has been spending heavily to keep up in AI, and this is the kind of moonshot that says it’s not just playing defense. If orbital data centers ever become real, Google wants an early seat on the rocket.
