Space: the next AI data center?
Google is apparently throwing a satellite into the ring as the AI space race heats up. It’s the kind of sentence that would’ve sounded like a fever dream a few years ago, but here we are: Big Tech is treating space like the next frontier for compute, connectivity, and bragging rights.
Why this matters
If Google is serious about pushing AI infrastructure beyond Earth, that tells you two things:
- It’s still looking for ways to expand its AI platform moat
- The company is willing to fund weird-looking experiments that could pay off if space-based compute or networking ever becomes real business
That matters for investors because Alphabet doesn’t just want to play the AI game — it wants to own the pipes, the power, and maybe now the orbit too.
The big picture
This is not likely to move the stock on its own today, but it fits Alphabet’s broader pattern: spend now, figure out the scale-up later. Sometimes that’s a moonshot. Sometimes it’s just, well, literally a moonshot.
Big picture: if the AI race is becoming an infrastructure race, Google is making sure it has a seat at every table — even the ones floating above the table.
