Not your average customer
Coinbase is pitching a future where the buyer might be software, not a person. Its new push around x402 and Coinbase Business is built for AI agents that need to pay for APIs, data, and other digital services with stablecoins.
The rails are the story
This isn’t just vibes and futurism. Coinbase says its x402 payment protocol can let agents transact directly in stablecoins, and it has tied that tech into Amazon Web Services’ Bedrock AgentCore Payments so agents can discover services and make micropayments in USDC. In plain English: Coinbase is trying to build the plumbing before the machine economy shows up.
Why investors should care
The bull case is simple:
- more AI agents
- more automated transactions
- more demand for stablecoin rails
Coinbase pointed to its second-quarter results, where it said more than 99% of onchain agentic commerce used USDC and over 90% of agentic stablecoin volume ran on Base. That’s not mass adoption yet, but it’s a nice proof-of-concept if you’re betting this category grows up instead of disappearing into a demo reel.
Big picture
BlackRock’s stablecoin take gets a shoutout here, but the real headline is Coinbase trying to become the Visa of bot-to-bot commerce. If AI spending keeps getting less sci-fi and more mundane, Coinbase could end up collecting tolls on a whole new class of transactions.
