The grid is starting to sweat
The U.S. power system is hitting a very unglamorous bottleneck: too much new generation, too little wire. Renewable energy curtailment is accelerating across wholesale power markets because transmission buildouts are moving at the speed of a government meeting while demand keeps sprinting ahead.
Enter the hyperscalers
Data centers are not exactly helping. The big cloud names are gobbling up electricity in regional clusters, and hyperscalers now make up a meaningful chunk of that demand growth. So even as utilities and developers add more supply, the grid still looks like it’s trying to drink a milkshake through a coffee stirrer.
Why investors should care
This kind of congestion can show up in a bunch of places:
- renewable developers may face more curtailment and weaker realized economics
- transmission and grid equipment makers could see long-run demand tailwinds
- storage, demand response, and load-management plays may get more attention
- utilities could face tougher planning and interconnection headaches
Big picture: the AI boom isn’t just reshaping software earnings — it’s also turning the electric grid into a very expensive game of Tetris.
