CEO out, chair on deck
MongoDB woke up Monday to a classic market mood killer: its CEO is leaving, effective immediately. Chirantan Desai is heading to a senior role at Meta, and that’s enough to send MDB shares tumbling nearly 20% like someone yanked the power cord.
The old boss is back
To keep the ship from drifting, MongoDB tapped a very familiar face. Dev Ittycheria, who led the company for about 11 years before stepping away in 2025, is returning as interim president and CEO. That’s the corporate version of calling your veteran starting quarterback back after the backup sprains an ankle.
The numbers say “we’re fine,” but the market says “uh, about that”
MongoDB tried to calm nerves by reaffirming its third-quarter and fiscal 2027 guidance. That’s important because the company is still telling Wall Street the underlying business looks healthy even if the top floor just got rearranged.
- Q3 adjusted EPS: $1.57 to $1.61, ahead of the $1.54 estimate
- Q3 sales: $756 million to $761 million, also above estimates
- Fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS: $6.39 to $6.58
- Fiscal 2027 sales: $2.99 billion to $3.03 billion
Why your eyes should stay on Tuesday
MongoDB also has an Investor Day on Tuesday at Nasdaq MarketSite, where executives are expected to talk strategy, developer data platforms, and AI. So yes, the timing is a little dramatic: CEO leaves, interim boss returns, guidance holds, and now the company has to sell the future with a fresh face at the podium.
Big picture: the business may still be intact, but when leadership changes this fast, investors tend to ask whether the next chapter is a sequel or a soft reboot.
