AI isn’t just eating the world — it’s heating it up
Lisa Cook’s message was basically: don’t get too cozy just yet. She said the AI buildout could keep inflation pressure alive in the coming months, which is Fed-speak for “this isn’t over.”
That matters because AI infrastructure is a giant appetite monster. Data centers, chips, power, cooling, land, construction — the whole stack costs money, and a lot of it. If that spending keeps humming, it can add a stubborn little tailwind to prices even as other parts of the economy cool.
The part investors care about
Cook also said she’ll be looking at what policy rate is needed to keep inflation heading back to target. Translation: the Fed is still in “depends what the data says” mode, not “mission accomplished, everyone go home.”
For markets, that usually means:
- rate-cut hopes don’t get a free pass
- long-duration assets may stay sensitive to every inflation read
- AI-related infrastructure spending can be a double-edged sword: growth candy now, rate-pressure later
Big picture
AI may be the new growth religion, but it also comes with a price tag big enough to make the Fed squint. If the buildout keeps stoking costs, the central bank could stay cautious longer than bulls would like.
