A little book deal with big-page energy
Scholastic is adding another kid-size name to its lineup: Cottage Door Press, a U.S. publisher focused on early childhood books, for about $71 million. The move is pretty straightforward M&A — less flashy than a mega-merger, but still enough to get investors leaning forward in their chairs.
Why should you care?
If you own SCHL, the question isn’t just “did they buy a company?” It’s “does this actually make the catalog better?” Scholastic is paying up for a business aimed at the youngest readers, which could help deepen its reach in a category that’s sticky, evergreen, and very giftable.
The market’s first reaction
Shares climbed in pre-market trading after the announcement, which is the market’s version of a polite golf clap. That doesn’t mean the deal is automatically a home run — investors still care about integration, price discipline, and whether $71 million turns into real earnings juice instead of a cute press release.
Big picture
For Scholastic, this is another reminder that in publishing, scale and catalog depth still matter. If the acquisition helps it sell more books, licenses, and related products to parents, schools, and gift-buying relatives, great. If not, it’s just a pricier way to collect more board books.
