Wall Street just handed FCEL a megaphone
FuelCell Energy got an early Tuesday jolt after Oppenheimer kicked off coverage with an Outperform rating and a $24 price target. That’s a pretty loud way of saying, “We think this thing has room to run,” especially when the stock was trading well below that level and already had traders doing the premarket happy dance.
The pitch: power-hungry data centers need juice
The bullish thesis is basically: the AI build-out is turning data centers into electricity gluttons, and FuelCell wants to be the guy bringing the snacks. Oppenheimer framed FCEL as a provider of firm, on-site power at a time when demand is outrunning supply, which is catnip for anyone hunting the next infrastructure trade.
The note also leaned on a few big numbers that make the story feel less like a vibes trade and more like an actual roadmap:
- a $3.3 billion backlog
- a pipeline north of 10 gigawatts
- more than 450 MW in capacity agreements
- a planned ramp to 500 MW per year by FY2029
That last one is the real stretch goal. If FuelCell can scale production without blowing up margins or cash, the operating leverage could get interesting fast.
Why investors are watching the balance sheet
Oppenheimer also pointed to roughly $737 million in cash exiting the third fiscal quarter of 2026, which gives FuelCell some runway while it tries to grow into its ambition. That matters because stock stories built on future capacity are fun right up until the company runs out of money before the future arrives.
Big picture: the stock market loves a turnaround with a theme
Today’s move isn’t about a new product launch or a sudden surge in sales. It’s about a sell-side analyst basically saying, “AI power demand is the wave, and FCEL might have a surfboard.” Whether that turns into a durable rally depends on execution, not just the headline-grabbing target. But for now, traders clearly liked the setup.
