The last puzzle piece
Coinbase says the CFTC has approved Coinbase Clearing LLC, which means the company now has all three of the big regulated pieces it needs for a full derivatives setup: a futures commission merchant, a designated contract market, and now a registered clearinghouse.
That’s a fancy way of saying Coinbase can do more of the trade lifecycle itself instead of handing the work off like a restaurant that suddenly decides to bake its own bread, make its own pasta, and call the supplier to say thanks but no thanks.
Why investors should care
The approval gives Coinbase more room to launch regulated derivatives products with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, which fits the always-on vibe of crypto way better than old-school market plumbing.
A few things jump out:
- It deepens Coinbase’s institutional infrastructure moat
- It could make future derivatives products easier to roll out
- It reinforces Coinbase’s push beyond simple spot trading into a broader financial stack
Not just a one-off headline
This comes as Coinbase has been stacking up other product and regulatory wins lately, including efforts around equities and perpetuals. Citi also showed up in the article as a partner on stablecoin payments, which is a nice reminder that Coinbase is trying to look less like a crypto app and more like a financial operating system.
Big picture: if Coinbase keeps turning regulatory approvals into actual products, the company could keep widening its gap with smaller crypto venues that still have to borrow someone else’s plumbing.
