New shares, same old supply/demand
Cerebras stock got smacked Wednesday as roughly 19.4 million shares hit the market in a lockup release. That’s one of the bigger unlocks in the company’s post-IPO schedule, and if you’re wondering why the stock looks wobbly, more tradable shares usually means more room for sellers to do their thing.
The unlock parade isn’t over
This wasn’t a one-and-done event. Cerebras’ IPO lockup is releasing shares in a series of waves, including three larger chunks that together free about 58 million shares. Two more big dates are still on the calendar on October 14th and October 28th, and the full lockup doesn’t fully expire until November 9th.
The OpenAI rumor mill adds extra spice
Separately, there’s chatter from SemiAnalysis that OpenAI’s newly unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast may be running on Nvidia GPUs rather than Cerebras hardware. OpenAI and Cerebras haven’t confirmed that, so file it under “interesting, but don’t bet the farm yet.” Still, for a stock that’s already trading below its IPO price of $185, even rumors can feel like a gust of wind against a very expensive kite.
Big picture: Cerebras is getting squeezed by two classic market forces at once — more shares available and less certainty about how central its chips really are to the AI boom.
