New deal, same old cloud hustle
Google Cloud and Chief Telecom are launching backup services aimed at making cable infrastructure tougher to knock out. In plain English: if one path goes down, there’s another route ready to keep the lights on.
Why investors should care
This isn’t the kind of announcement that makes headlines like a flashy AI model or a moonshot acquisition. But it does show Google Cloud selling the sort of boring-but-valuable plumbing that enterprises actually pay for. And boring infrastructure contracts can be very, very good for retention.
The bigger picture
For Alphabet, every new cloud partnership is another brick in the wall against the “Google is just ads” narrative. It also hints at a broader push into mission-critical workloads, where customers don’t just test-drive the product — they rely on it when things break.
Big picture: sometimes the best cloud business is the one that quietly prevents a very expensive outage.
