Texas-sized ambition
NextEra Energy is joining Related Companies and Lewis Energy Group on Project Star, a planned $22.3 billion energy infrastructure campus in Encinal, Texas. The headline number is big enough to need its own trailer, but the real story is the setup: 6.47 GW of natural gas generation designed to power a 5 GW digital infrastructure campus and still send extra electricity back to the grid.
Why investors are paying attention
This isn’t just another ribbon-cutting with hard hats and buzzwords. It’s a signal that the AI/data-center power buildout is still very much alive, and NextEra wants a seat at the table where the electrons are getting monetized. If the project moves forward as planned, it could deepen NextEra’s exposure to long-duration infrastructure demand — the kind of thing utilities and independent power players love because it can be sticky and expensive to replicate.
The bigger backdrop
The U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of the Republic of Korea are backing the investment announcement, which adds a little geopolitical spice to the mix. Translation: this is not a backyard solar farm. It’s a heavyweight infrastructure bet tied to the broader race to power digital infrastructure.
Big picture: if the AI boom is a gold rush, Project Star is the company selling shovels, pickaxes, and maybe the town’s entire electricity grid.
