Digi goes shopping
Digi International just agreed to buy Disruptive Technologies, an advanced sensing technology firm, for $130 million in cash. On paper, that’s a pretty straightforward “buy the thing you want, bolt it onto the platform” move.
Why this matters
For Digi, the logic is easy to see: it’s an IoT company, and sensing tech is the kind of capability that can make its product stack feel more complete. If the deal goes well, Digi could deepen its offering and cross-sell into more customers.
The catch
The company said it plans to use its debt facility to finance the purchase, which is investor-speak for: this doesn’t come free.
- More leverage can be fine if the deal is accretive
- But if integration gets messy, the debt starts looking a lot less charming
Big picture
This is the classic acquisition tradeoff: growth by purchase versus growth by patience. If Digi can stitch Disruptive Technologies into its business cleanly, investors may like the added capability. If not, it’s another reminder that M&A can be equal parts strategy and expensive optimism.
