Pickleball, but make it a cruise
Holland America Line, part of Carnival, is turning RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay into a full-on pickleball destination. The company says it will host a Private Island Invitational with the Professional Pickleball Association during a special March 2027 Caribbean cruise.
The setup isn’t just one splashy event. Carnival is also rolling out four Countdown Cruises, which will feature player appearances, onboard pickleball programming, and island play opportunities to build hype ahead of the main event.
Why this matters
This is the kind of thing cruise lines love: a niche event that gives people a reason to book now instead of scrolling Expedia for the 19th time and doing nothing.
For Carnival, the angle is pretty clear:
- make the brand feel more premium and experience-driven
- create a hook for higher-yield itineraries
- give loyal customers something that feels exclusive, not interchangeable
The bigger play
Pickleball has become the corporate equivalent of a gold sticker that says “fun, but also for adults with disposable income.” If Carnival can keep layering these weirdly specific experiences on top of the usual sun-and-buffet formula, it gives the company more ways to stand out in a crowded cruise market.
Big picture: this isn’t a financial fireworks moment, but it does show Carnival still thinks the best way to win hearts — and bookings — is to turn a vacation into an event.
