The payments crowd wants in
Stablecoins have been the crypto equivalent of that one app you only used for one weird thing — until now. A consortium backed by more than 100 companies, including Visa and Mastercard, just launched OUSD, a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin designed for businesses and developers.
And this isn’t some lonely startup yelling into the blockchain void. The project is rolling out with initial access through Visa, Stripe, Mastercard-owned BVNK, and Coinbase, plus plans for consortium members to weave OUSD into their own products.
Why investors should care
If you’re holding Coinbase, this is the kind of news that says: the rails are widening. Coinbase isn’t just a trading app when the market is sleepy — it’s increasingly becoming infrastructure for crypto payments and stablecoin distribution.
For the old-guard payments names, the message is similarly loud:
- Visa and Mastercard are not sitting on the sidelines while stablecoins try to rewrite money movement.
- Stripe is helping seed the ecosystem after buying Bridge in 2025.
- Shopify reportedly committed to minting about $1 billion of OUSD to help bootstrap liquidity.
That’s not a cute pilot. That’s a serious attempt to make stablecoins usable at scale.
The catch: dominance is a brutal boss
Of course, taking on Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC is like trying to elbow your way into a nightclub that’s already at fire code capacity. USDT still has roughly $184 billion in circulation, and even big-brand stablecoin efforts like PayPal’s have stayed relatively small.
So yes, OUSD has distribution and brand power. But adoption is the real boss fight. The market has already seen this story before: strong launch, lots of fanfare, and then the dull reality of getting merchants, developers, and users to actually care.
Big picture
This launch is another sign that stablecoins are moving from crypto-adjacent novelty to financial plumbing. If the consortium can turn those logos into actual usage, the winners could be the platforms that sit closest to the money flow — and that’s exactly why investors will be watching COIN, MA, V, and SHOP so closely.
