Another trip to the bond market
NCL Corporation Ltd., a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, is back with a plan to sell $750 million of senior notes due 2031 in a private offering. Translation: instead of borrowing from your rich uncle, the company is borrowing from bond buyers.
Why you should care
For NCLH investors, this is a classic trade-off:
- Pro: more cash on the balance sheet now, which can help with refinancing or general corporate needs
- Con: more debt means more interest expense and more leverage to manage when the economy gets choppy
Cruise lines are basically giant floating capital expenses, so this kind of financing move isn’t shocking. Still, every new debt issue is a reminder that the business has to keep generating enough cash to service that stack of obligations without blowing a hole in future profits.
Big picture
This looks like a funding move, not a panic move — but in cruise land, debt is always part of the itinerary.
