Five years in, and AmEx is still dishing out the sauce
American Express and the International Downtown Association Foundation just opened applications for this year’s Backing International Small Restaurants grants program. The initiative is in its fifth year, aims to hand out more than $1.5 million, and is designed to support 100+ independent restaurants across nine countries.
The new ingredient: Italy
This year’s twist? The program is expanding to Italy for the first time. That’s a neat little flex for a brand that’s spent years trying to make itself feel less like a plastic rectangle and more like a lifestyle ecosystem with better table service.
Why investors should care
This isn’t a revenue line item that’ll make you spit out your coffee. But it does matter because it shows AmEx is still investing in:
- merchant relationships
- small-business brand loyalty
- international presence
- consumer goodwill that makes the card feel a little more premium, a little more sticky
In other words: the company is using its balance sheet to keep its brand in the “helpful partner” bucket, not the “just a payment rail” bucket.
Big picture
The stock probably isn’t moving on a restaurant grant announcement alone. But for a company like AmEx, these campaigns are part of the long game — making the card feel indispensable to both cardholders and merchants. And in payments, vibes matter more than they should.
