AI chips need a lot more babysitting
Lam Research is riding the same wave that’s making chipmaking feel like assembling a spaceship in a hurricane: the more advanced the chip, the more steps, tools, and precision it takes to make it. That’s good news for Lam, which sells equipment and services tied to those extra layers of complexity.
The installed base is doing some heavy lifting
This isn’t just a one-and-done equipment story. As chipmakers expand and modernize their factories, Lam also gets more recurring service revenue from the gear already out in the wild. In other words, the business has a built-in “maintenance mode” that helps smooth out the boom-bust fun of semis.
But the valuation already has big dreams
At around $340 a share, Lam trades at 35.9 times forward earnings, which is rich compared with its own five-year average. That means investors aren’t exactly buying a hidden gem at a flea market price — they’re paying for a fairly robust growth story already.
Big picture
Lam still has a compelling long-term setup if advanced chip production keeps getting more complicated. But with the stock priced for a lot of optimism, this one’s more “cautious buy” than all-in YOLO.
