New challenger, same prize
Rocket Lab was already trying to win NASA business. Now the plot twist is that Blue Origin is circling the same Mars Telecommunications Network contract, which makes this less “easy government candy” and more “everybody grab a paddle.”
Why investors should care
If Rocket Lab lands a piece of this work, it adds more proof that it can play in the big-league space systems arena, not just launch small rockets and ship components. NASA contracts can be sticky, prestigious, and very good for the “we’re not just a meme stock anymore” narrative.
But don’t sleep on the downside
- Blue Origin brings deep pockets and Bezos-sized patience
- NASA procurement is a long, twisty soap opera, not a clean sprint
- A loss wouldn’t kill the thesis, but it would be a reminder that Rocket Lab is still fighting giants with very shiny toys
Big picture
This is the kind of competition that can be bullish and annoying at the same time: bullish because the addressable market is real, annoying because your favorite upstart now has to outrun a competitor with practically unlimited runway.
