AI, but make it accounting
Amazon is reportedly in talks to move about $8 billion of NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips into a special purpose vehicle, according to the Financial Times. Translation: instead of keeping all that expensive silicon on the main balance sheet, the company may be trying to package it elsewhere.
That matters because it hints at a bigger question hanging over the AI trade: when your shopping cart is full of multi-million-dollar chips, data-center gear, and power-hungry infrastructure, do you finance it like a regular tech upgrade or like a mini utility project? The answer could shape how fast companies can keep buying Nvidia's crown-jewel hardware.
Why investors should squint a little
If this structure moves forward, it could:
- Make AI spending look less immediately chunky on Amazon's books
- Signal that the economics of AI infrastructure are getting complicated fast
- Reinforce just how much demand there still is for Nvidia's high-end chips
And yes, the whole thing has a slightly “we bought a yacht but put it in an LLC” vibe.
Big picture
This isn't about one accounting maneuver so much as the growing cost of being in the AI arms race. If the biggest buyers are getting more inventive with financing, that's a clue the bill for the next wave of AI buildout is getting very real.
