The vibes are still good. The valuation? Not so much.
Costco didn’t suddenly turn into a busted retailer. In fact, the note says the company is still putting up solid numbers: Q4 sales rose 11.2% and EPS climbed 15%. That’s not exactly a cry for help.
But the stock is doing that classic market thing where a great company gets treated like a flawless one. The downgrade argues Costco’s membership income and traffic growth are slowing, and at more than 40x forward earnings, the shares are priced for perfection. That’s a dangerous place to camp out when perfection is already expensive.
Why investors should care
This is the kind of call that can matter even when the underlying business is fine. If the market decides Costco deserves a lower multiple, the stock can drift lower without any dramatic fundamental crack.
- The business is still strong
- The stock is just very expensive
- The analyst thinks COST needs to fall 15% to 20% before it starts looking interesting again
Big picture
Costco’s loyal shoppers are still doing Costco things — bulk paper towels, giant snack packs, and all. But in stock-land, “really good” and “worth any price” are very different animals. And right now, this call says the animal is a little overfed.
