Not the usual chip showdown
This one isn’t really about who can build the biggest AI brain anymore. It’s about who can make that brain answer in a blink — and that’s where Cerebras is trying to carve out its lane against Nvidia.
Shares of Cerebras popped more than 7% after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stepped in to say the company is still a “close partner” and that the two are pushing the frontier of speed together. That mattered because a recent SemiAnalysis report had investors side-eyeing the setup, suggesting OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast tier was running on Nvidia GPUs instead of Cerebras hardware. Not exactly the kind of rumor that makes traders sleep well.
Inference: the new AI gold rush
Here’s the twist: the market may be bigger than the debate.
Inference is the part of AI that happens after the model is trained — the millions of little moments when a user asks a question, generates code, or gets a chatbot reply. Cerebras is betting that low-latency workloads are valuable enough to support specialized hardware, and Wall Street is starting to put real dollars behind that idea.
Mizuho’s Vijay Rakesh reiterated an Outperform rating and slapped a $300 price target on CBRS, arguing the fast-inference market could hit $550 billion by 2030. That’s not a side quest. That’s a full-blown economy.
Why Nvidia still matters
None of this means Nvidia is suddenly the awkward kid at the AI lunch table. Its ecosystem is still the heavyweight champ, spanning training and inference across a massive software and hardware stack. Cerebras is making a narrower bet: that when milliseconds matter, customers will pay up for speed.
And yes, the OpenAI relationship is the whole ballgame here. Cerebras says it has a multiyear deal for 750 megawatts of inference capacity through 2028, plus cloud growth that it said was up 281% year over year in August. The big question now is whether those promises turn into more customers, better margins, and actual durable demand — not just flashy benchmark bragging rights.
Big picture: if AI becomes less about brute-force training and more about instant answers, there may be room for more than one winner. That’s the opening Cerebras is trying to sprint through.
