Not exactly a calm energy backdrop
European natural-gas prices are rising because the market still feels like it’s walking a tightrope with a gusty wind below it. Low storage levels are making traders nervous, and that’s true even after LNG flows from the Persian Gulf recently recovered.
Why investors should care
When storage is thin, every hiccup in supply gets amplified. That can mean:
- more volatility in European power and gas prices
- higher pressure on energy-intensive industries
- knock-on effects for inflation and the policy debate around it
The “we’re fine… until we’re not” problem
This is the kind of setup markets hate: supply looks a little better, but the cushion is still small. So even a modest disruption can send prices jumping like a playlist with the volume knob stuck on 11.
Big picture: Europe may have gotten a breather from stronger LNG inflows, but with storage still low, the gas market isn’t out of the woods — it’s just wearing a nicer coat.
