New chapter for VK2735
Viking Therapeutics is starting an exploratory oral maintenance dosing study for VK2735, its dual GLP-1/GIP agonist being developed for obesity and other metabolic disorders. The company wants to see whether an oral version can help patients hold onto the weight loss they got from earlier subcutaneous dosing.
Why the market cares
That’s the kind of update biotech investors love to squint at through the microscope: it’s not a full approval, not a late-stage readout, and definitely not a money-printing machine yet. But it does tell you Viking is still actively pushing VK2735 beyond the “cool science project” phase and into the much more lucrative “can this actually be a product?” phase.
The fine print
- The study is exploratory, so this is more proof-of-concept than blockbuster data.
- Viking is also evaluating monthly and every-other-week subcutaneous regimens, which gives the company more ways to show flexibility in dosing.
- The goal is simple: make obesity treatment easier to use without losing the weight-loss benefit.
Big picture: for biotech names, momentum matters almost as much as results. Today’s update won’t rewrite the obesity drug race, but it does keep Viking in the conversation — and in biotech, staying in the conversation is half the game.
