The AI monster needs snacks
Google is reportedly nearing a $1 billion-plus nuclear power deal with Constellation, according to Bloomberg. That’s not exactly pocket change, but it makes sense when you remember that AI models, data centers, and all the digital plumbing behind them are basically electricity-hungry monsters with very expensive taste.
For Google, the appeal is obvious: nuclear power is steady, carbon-light, and far less moody than solar or wind when the company needs round-the-clock energy for its growing infrastructure. For Constellation, it’s a nice reminder that the old-school power business just got a little more glamorous thanks to the AI boom.
Why investors should pay attention
This kind of deal tells you a few things:
- Google is still willing to spend big to keep its AI and cloud ambitions fed
- Power procurement is becoming a strategic advantage, not just an operating expense
- Utilities and independent power producers could become surprising beneficiaries of the AI arms race
Big picture
If AI is the new gold rush, electricity is the shovel business — and Google just may be writing one very large check for the tools.
