The cloud party got a lot bigger
Alphabet just tossed out a headline number that makes a regular backlog look like pocket change: $514 billion. That’s the value of its cloud backlog, and it comes with a side of higher capex guidance and longer-term commitments.
Why this matters
Backlog is basically the corporate version of “we’ve already got orders in the cart.” A number that size suggests demand is not the issue — execution is. If Google Cloud keeps converting that pipeline into revenue, it could start looking less like the side hustle and more like the next big growth engine.
The catch: it’s not free money
Alphabet is also spending more upfront, which means the cloud boom comes with a fat bill attached. More capex usually means more data centers, more chips, more power, and more patience from investors who have to wait for the payoff.
- Bigger backlog = more visibility into future cloud sales
- Higher capex = more confidence, but also more near-term pressure on margins and cash flow
- Search still matters, but Google Cloud is looking less like a supporting actor and more like the plot twist
Big picture: if Alphabet can turn that backlog into actual revenue without melting margins, you’ve got a company whose growth story may be getting a serious second act.
