New headache, same merger
NextEra’s proposed deal with Dominion is running into a very public buzzsaw in Virginia. Lt. Gov. Hashmi is opposing the merger as hearings begin, which is basically the political version of someone saying, “Cool idea, but not in my backyard.”
Why you should care
For utilities, mergers aren’t just about balance sheets and synergy slides. They need regulatory blessing, and that blessing can take forever — or never show up at all. A loud political objection can slow the process, add uncertainty, and make investors wonder whether the deal will survive the full gauntlet.
What this means for the stock
This isn’t a final verdict, but it is friction. And friction is rarely what merger arbitrage traders want to hear. If the hearing process turns into a long fight, NextEra could spend more time in deal purgatory than in growth mode.
Big picture: utility megadeals live and die by regulators, and right now this one is looking less like a smooth handshake and more like a courtroom season finale.
