Same movie, different decade?
Albert Edwards, a longtime market bear, is waving a familiar red flag: the AI boom may be running ahead of its economic reality. His basic take is that the productivity and profit boost everyone keeps promising is still mostly a future story, not a present one.
Why investors should care
That matters because AI is doing a lot of heavy lifting for market sentiment right now. If the “AI will change everything” trade starts to look more like “AI might change things eventually,” then valuations built on that optimism could get a little wobbly.
The awkward part
Markets love a good narrative until earnings have to do the talking. Right now, AI is still somewhere between:
- a genuine long-term growth engine
- and a very expensive PowerPoint deck
Big picture: even if AI really is the next industrial revolution, investors usually have to survive the part where everybody pays for the revolution before anyone cashes in on it.
