Xbox wants the full franchise buffet
Microsoft’s Xbox unit is apparently not content with just selling you a console and a game pass subscription. It’s now forming a media division, led by a veteran exec, with the goal of expanding game franchises into something much bigger.
That usually means the same thing Hollywood has been doing for years: if a franchise has fans, squeeze every last drop out of it. TV? Maybe. Movies? Probably. Merch, spin-offs, transmedia universe nonsense? Don’t put it past them.
Why investors should care
For Microsoft, this is about turning Xbox into a brand engine, not just a gaming business. If it works, the company could:
- stretch popular game IP across more screens
- build new revenue streams without having to invent new characters from scratch
- keep fans inside the Microsoft ecosystem longer
The bigger play
This is also a hint that Microsoft sees gaming as a long-term franchise business, not just a hardware or subscription story. That matters because the best media companies don’t just sell the first product — they build a whole universe around it.
Big picture: Xbox is trying to become less of a console brand and more of a pop-culture machine. If it can pull that off, the payoff could be bigger than the latest controller colorway.
