New name, same car
Tesla is quietly rebranding its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software in Europe to Tesla Assisted Driving. That’s not a software upgrade; it’s a diplomacy upgrade. When regulators say your product name sounds like a promise the car can’t actually keep, you don’t exactly want to double down and argue semantics.
Germany just gave Tesla a nudge
German officials had already made it clear they thought the old FSD label was misleading because drivers still need to pay attention. So Tesla appears to have met them halfway: same driver-assist tech, less sci-fi branding, and hopefully fewer raised eyebrows in Brussels.
Why investors should care
This is about access, not autopilot glory.
- A friendlier name could help Tesla win broader EU approval for the system.
- Reuters reported the vote on broader authorization has already been pushed out to at least December, so timing still matters.
- Tesla shares were up 1.26% in overnight trading, which tells you the market likes any whiff of progress on autonomy.
Big picture
Tesla’s Europe playbook looks a lot like a passport control line: rename the form, calm the officials, and try not to get sent back to the end of the queue. If the company can turn regulatory skepticism into approval, that’s a lot more valuable than a flashy website label.
