Medicare just handed Humana a shiny sticker
Humana woke up Friday with some very good news from CMS: its 2027 Medicare Advantage Star Ratings improved a lot, and the market responded like it just found the last cold brew in the office fridge. Shares jumped 16.09% premarket to a fresh 52-week high.
The headline stat is the one investors care about most: 95% of Humana members are now in plans rated at least four stars, and 42% are in plans rated 4.5 stars or higher. In Medicare-land, that’s not just a pat on the back — it can influence enrollment, bonuses, and how competitive the company looks against the rest of the pack.
Why this is a big deal
Humana also said it met 663,000 more care opportunities and got 534,000 more members to annual preventive visits versus last year. Translation: the company is doing a better job of keeping members inside the care funnel, which tends to make insurers look prettier on paper and, ideally, in the P&L too.
The company didn’t stop at the ratings victory lap. It reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook of at least $9 per share, even though that’s still a touch below the $9.15 analyst consensus. So yes, the bar is still high — but the market seems more interested in the operational momentum than the slight earnings haircut.
The long game
Humana also teased a 2028 benefit it expects to use for one-time investments and returns to shareholders, though it says it’ll give more detail later when it has a clearer view of the competitive and regulatory backdrop. That’s corporate-speak for: “We’re not ready to open the whole playbook yet, but we like the cards we’ve been dealt.”
Big picture: for Humana, better star ratings aren’t just bragging rights. They’re a signal that the company may be regaining its footing in a business where small operational gains can turn into very real dollars.
