Coke’s Costa coffee detour
Coca-Cola is reportedly looking to exit its Costa Coffee acquisition, a $5 billion bet from 2018 that never quite turned into the caffeine-fueled growth story everyone hoped for. Instead of pouring more money into the café business, Coke seems to be reaching for the receipt.
Why this matters
For a company like Coca-Cola, portfolio discipline is the whole game. If Costa is on the chopping block, that can mean one of a few things:
- management wants to redeploy capital into faster-growing or higher-margin businesses
- the company thinks the coffee chain is more valuable to someone else than to Coke
- this could be a subtle admission that the original acquisition didn’t exactly sip like a victory latte
Big picture
Asset sales don’t always scream drama, but they can tell you a lot about where a company thinks its best growth lives. If Coke can unload Costa at a decent price, that could be a small win for capital allocation — even if the original check was a pricey one.
