Sold out? That’s one way to say it
Lumentum is basically telling Wall Street: don’t ask for more chips, the buffet is closed. The company said its AI optical components are sold out through 2029, which means the demand story around AI infrastructure is still very much alive — and apparently still very hungry.
Why investors should care
When a supplier is booked that far out, it can be a gift and a headache at the same time:
- Gift: pricing power tends to get friendlier when customers are lined up at the door
- Headache: supply constraints can keep revenue from scaling as fast as demand would like
- Signal: the AI buildout isn’t just a GPU party; the optical plumbing underneath it is also stretched thin
The not-so-secret sauce
Optical components are the quiet little workhorses of AI data centers. They’re not the celebrity in the room — that’s still the GPUs — but they’re the stuff making the whole club function. If Lumentum is sold out for years, that suggests the AI spending wave is still working its way deeper into the hardware stack.
Big picture
This doesn’t mean the stock goes straight up forever, but it does tell you the demand picture is real, sticky, and not just a one-quarter sugar rush. In AI land, the picks-and-shovels trade is still very much picking and shoveling.
