Earnings season: the market’s next pop quiz
Wall Street is rolling into third-quarter earnings season like a student who swears they studied. According to PNC Asset Management CIO Amanda Agati, the setup still looks decent: companies are posting sturdy fundamentals, consumers are hanging in there, and that combo could keep U.S. stocks supported.
The AI money question
The real suspense isn’t just whether companies beat estimates. It’s whether the giant pile of AI spending starts paying off outside the usual suspects. If the benefits are limited to the mega-cap tech names, the market story stays pretty lopsided. If more companies can show real revenue or productivity gains, that’s when the rally can start looking less like a VIP section and more like a full-house party.
Why investors care
Agati also said she still prefers domestic equities over developed international markets, basically because U.S. earnings growth is doing the heavy lifting. That’s a pretty familiar Wall Street trade: follow the money, and right now the money still seems to like American corporate balance sheets.
- Strong consumer spending is helping the earnings backdrop
- Investors want proof AI investments are creating returns
- U.S. stocks still look more attractive than developed international peers
Big picture: if earnings season delivers the goods, stocks may get a fresh excuse to climb. If not, the market may have to keep pretending one or two tech giants can carry the whole gym.
