AI racks, but make it photonics
Corning, Lumentum, and Astera Labs are rolling out a joint demo at the 2026 OCP Global Summit in San Jose, showing off PCIe-over-optics connectivity built for AI rack-scale systems. Translation: they’re trying to move data around big AI setups faster than copper cables can keep up, because the AI arms race has turned networking into a very expensive game of hallway logistics.
The setup blends Astera Labs’ Scorpio Smart Fabric Switch, Lumentum’s 1060 nm VCSEL-based optical interconnect platform, and Corning’s multimode fiber connectivity. That’s a lot of shiny hardware, but the point is simple: AI racks are getting thirstier, and the old-school wiring starts to look like dial-up in a fiber-optic world.
Why investors should care
For Corning, this is less about a one-day demo and more about staying relevant in the next wave of data-center spending. If AI infrastructure keeps pushing toward bigger, faster rack-scale systems, fiber and optical connectivity could become the plumbing everyone needs — the glamorous unglamorous stuff.
Big picture
This doesn’t mean a guaranteed revenue bonanza tomorrow. But it does tell you where the puck is going: more AI, more bandwidth, more demand for the stuff that moves bits without melting down your rack.
