Google wants the inside scoop
Alphabet is pushing Google Health beyond the usual “how many steps did you take?” stuff. Its new partnership with Function Health lets U.S. users share lab results with Google Health later this fall, giving Google a shot at stitching together wearable data and actual biology.
That matters because wearables can tell you your sleep was bad or your heart rate was up, but they can’t exactly peek inside your bloodstream. Function Health brings more than 160 lab tests into the mix, covering things like cholesterol-related markers, fasting insulin, inflammation, hormones, and nutrients. In other words: Google wants the dashboard and the backstage pass.
Why this could matter for Alphabet
For Alphabet, the upside is engagement. If Google Health can connect the dots between your workouts, sleep, and lab results, users may come back more often — which is the whole game in consumer tech. More time in Google’s health ecosystem also makes Pixel Watch and Fitbit a little less like gadgets and a little more like gateways.
Apple’s already on the treadmill
Apple is not sitting around polishing its trophies. It expanded its Health app in September with AI insights, a longevity dashboard, and lab-test purchases through Quest Diagnostics. So this is shaping up like a classic Big Tech race: who can turn messy human data into something useful enough that you actually keep opening the app?
Big picture: the partnership looks promising, but the real question is adoption. If users trust Google with sensitive health data and keep coming back for the insights, this could become a sneaky-valuable ecosystem play. If not, it’s just another shiny feature in the app graveyard.
