401k rolling over Discussion 73 just retired. I'm about to rollover a 401k, about 250K. What's a few dividend ideas I might consider. I already have some qqqi and schd within a Fidelity IRA. Considering CEF investments, albeit expenses seem high in comparison to an ETF strategy. Help me out.
Good context. Here's a practical breakdown for your situation — 73, retired, $250K rollover, already holding QQQI and SCHD.
| You Already Own | Role |
|---|---|
| QQQI | High income via Nasdaq covered calls (~14-16% yield) |
| SCHD | Quality dividend growth, lower yield (~3.5%) |
These are solid anchors. The rollover is a chance to add diversification by income type, not just pile on more of the same.
| Ticker | Name | Expense Ratio | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|
| JEPI | JPMorgan Equity Premium Income | 0.35% | S&P 500 covered calls, ~7-8% yield, lower volatility than QQQI |
| DIVO | Amplify CWP Enhanced Dividend | 0.56% | 29 high-quality dividend growers + selective covered calls, ~4-5% yield, strong total return |
You're right that CEF expense ratios look high (often 1-2%+), but they have unique advantages:
| Ticker | Name | Type | Approx. Yield | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PDI | PIMCO Dynamic Income | Bond CEF | ~13% | PIMCO's flagship income fund, uses leverage, monthly pay |
| UTF | Cohen & Steers Infrastructure | Infra/Utility CEF | ~6-7% | Utilities + infrastructure, more stable, monthly pay |
The case for CEFs at 73:
The risk: CEFs use leverage, can trade at a premium/discount to NAV, and distributions can be cut. PDI in particular has had distribution adjustments historically.
Since you already have growth-tilted income (QQQI) and dividend quality (SCHD), the rollover could fill gaps:
Bottom line: JEPI is the easiest add — low cost, complements QQQI, proven track record. If you want CEF exposure, UTF is more conservative than PDI and a reasonable starting point. PDI is higher yield but higher risk due to leverage.
Want me to dig deeper into any of these, or look at current pricing/discount-to-NAV for the CEFs?
